Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) is often the first security engagement an organization buys — because a regulator, a client, or an auditor asked for it. The difference between a useful VAPT and a box-ticking one is mostly decided before testing starts, at the scoping stage.
Vulnerability assessment vs. penetration testing
A vulnerability assessment uses scanning and analysis to find known weaknesses across many systems. A penetration test goes further: skilled testers try to exploit weaknesses, chain them together, and show what an attacker could actually achieve. Most organizations need both — broad coverage plus depth on the systems that matter most.
Common VAPT types
- External network — internet-facing infrastructure, as an outside attacker sees it
- Internal network — what an attacker or malicious insider could do once inside
- Web application — authentication, authorization, business logic, and injection flaws
- Mobile application — the app, its storage, and the APIs behind it
- API — often the most exposed and least tested part of modern platforms
- Cloud configuration — misconfigurations in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Social engineering — phishing simulations that test people and processes
What drives scope and effort
- Number of IP addresses, applications, and API endpoints in scope
- Application complexity: user roles, workflows, and integrations
- Testing approach: black-box, grey-box (with credentials), or white-box
- Environment: production, staging, or both, and any testing windows
- Regulatory requirements — for example NCA, SAMA, or DESC reporting expectations
- Whether a retest of fixed findings is included
What a good report looks like
A useful report ranks findings by real business risk, shows evidence for each one, explains how to fix it in terms your developers can act on, and includes an executive summary leadership can read in five minutes. It should be followed by a retest to confirm fixes worked.
Questions to ask a provider
- Who will actually do the testing, and what are their qualifications?
- Is testing manual, or mostly automated scanning?
- Can you see a sample (redacted) report?
- Is a retest included, and within what timeframe?
- How is sensitive data handled during and after testing?
